IF WE KEEP DIGGING, WE'LL BE DIGGING OUR GRAVE
'Mother is Burning is a song I wrote in January 2020 when the Australian bushfires were at the peak of devastation... animals begging for water amongst thousands of acres of ancient, native beauty burning at the mercy of uncontrollable flames in a matter of hours and days.
It made me think a lot about society and nature, the connection between the two, 'human nature' and 'humans in nature'.
In general, it seems our perception of our connection with nature is disjointed. We do not see ourselves as at one with nature. This statement excludes Indigenous Peoples, (the rightful owners of the land) who's connection to the land is ancient, respectful, profound and resourceful and one that we as a western culture can learn from.
It seems, over time, we have separated ourselves and have become humans in nature. For me, the term 'human nature' quite clearly suggests that nature is the origin of the human race. Though the structure that society has built, humans have been positioned at a hierarchical distance from the rest of the ecosystem.
I don't mean to generalise when I say 'we' because I know that what I am stating does not reflect many people's views and relationship to nature, though I have written Mother is Burning as a call to bring all of us together as a 'we' who stand in solidarity with nature - learning to recognise that we are a part of it and not above it. - Merryn Jeann
Merryn Jeann is an Australian musician based in Paris, France.
Driven by her instinct, and far from established codes, Merryn Jeann intrigues those who come across her music.
To cope with the ecological emergency, Merryn wrote Mother is Burning song to 'spark the question of our relationship with nature... To really think about our actions and how we treat her... The consequences of ignorance and continuation of our use of natural resources to benefit a capitalist structure...This year alone has been an incredibly obvious cry for help. What we're doing is not going to work anymore. In order to sustain and grow, Mother Nature is calling for a change.'
The song features cello played by Cecile Lacharme and the young voices of Cape Byron Rudolf Steiner School.
lyrics
Mother is burning
The animals are dying
The people are homeless
Only ash left in their pockets
You knew this was coming
Now the Red Sun's upon us
Dogs are howling in the middle of the day
Coal in his hand 'don't be afraid, this is for the people, itis for global trade'
He wants to keep digging to keep the light on
But he exports the fire, 'don't be scared, we have fire now!'
If you keep digging,
If you keep digging,
You'll be digging our grave
If you keep digging, digging, digging
you'll be digging your grave too
Life has troubled me
Life has troubled you
We had different teachers who taught us different truths
Well I understand how we got we are
But this is more than fact, this is a lesson of the heart
We are asking you to be brave,
please fight the fire, put out the flame
This is no longer a rich man's game
This is us losing the place we all live
When I say we, i mean you too
For noone can tell Mother what to do
She feels angry, she's been abused
she tried to warn us now there's nothing she can do
Mother is burning
The animals are dying
The children are hopeless
With only ash in their future
If you keep digging,
If you keep digging,
You'll be digging our grave
If you keep digging, digging, digging
you'll be digging your grave too
If you keep digging,
If you keep digging,
You'll be digging our grave
If you keep digging you'll be digging your grave too
